Perennials
Echinacea Purpurpea cultivar Kims Kneehighs
This is a fairly new cultivar with one great asset, compact growth. It yields those great pinkish -purple cone flowers with a warm golden yellow tinted brown center. The compactness of this plant lends itself to a small border and pots. You can even place a small row in front of a hedge. It's well behaved and will surely be a hit. It grows in the same condition as other Echinacea, well- drained soil and full sun. Fertilize in the spring and you're off and running.
Verbascum Southern Charm
Southern Charm is an outstanding plant for the lower south. It produces sterile seeds and therefore continues to try and set seeds all season long. Therefore, it keeps blooming and blooming. This little verbascum blooms throughout the entire season with a small amount of fertilzer. It comes in pleasant pastels of yellow, pink and rose, and is a great substitute for small foxgloves. It's rosette forming and can be divided every couple of years.
Succulents
Kalanchoe Thyrsifolia or Pancake Kalanchoe
This is a fabulous plant for pot culture, it's highly structured with the pancake shaped leaves that grow to 7-8 inches in diameter and unfolds like a deck of cards. It has an attractive light green color with a red edge on the border of the leaves. The leaves become completely red with the cool nights of the winter, but will need protection from the cold during hard freezes. You can combine the gaillardia red plume with this for a great combination. They both like dry, sparse growing conditions.
Shrubs
Elaeagnus X ebbingei 'Gilted Edge'
A beautiful Elaeagnus not commonly found in our area. It has all the durable features of Elaeagnus. This variety is compact in growth an added advantage, with the most beautiful variegated yellow and green leaves. One of the brightest yellows I've seen in any variegation. It is somewhat shade tolerant and acts like a bright light in the shade. It's a must to have if you like yellow variegation in shrubbery.
Trees
Juniperus Scopulorum 'Sky Rocket'
This Juniper can be a substitute for Italian Cypress but it is smaller in scale. It reaches 12 - 15 feet with a 2 feet spread, is tall and has an extremely narrow columnar growth pattern. A very striking, dramatic plant when used. as a cluster planting against a fence or house. The bluish green foliage is evergreen. Be sure to plant in a dry area
